When the Pop art movement first surfaced in the mid 1950s artists sought to challenge traditional conceptions of art making by incorporating consumer culture and everyday objects into their work.

Artists during this period transformed icons associated with mass media, comic books, and popular culture into visual expressions that often reflected a growing societal infatuation with consumerism. When it originated, the Pop art movement sought to ironically emphasize images representing the commonplace or kitschy elements of a given culture.

Today, contemporary artists have elaborated on the traditions established by the Pop artists who created an aesthetic style that reflected the changing needs and interests of varying societies.

This exhibition merges art that reflects and comments on popular culture and vernacular of the 1960s until the present with selections curated from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.

Artists and Works in the exhibition
From the time of the earliest cave paintings, artists have continued man's ceaseless dialogue with the elements, drawing inspiration from natural phenomena as well as wildlife. The theme of nature is particularly poignant for Louisiana residents at this time.

The past five years have witnessed the unprecedented elevation of the Mississippi River, devastating hurricanes, including Katrina and Gustave, the Gulf oil spill, and ongoing coastal erosion.

Forces of Nature: Selections from the Weisman Art Foundation presents universal insights as well as the artists' personal observations concerning environmental issues.

Exemplifying a wide range of contemporary production and aesthetic practices, the work of more than 60 artists is included. Internationally acclaimed artists, such as Joe Goode, Red Grooms, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, and Neil Welliver, are featured alongside emerging talent. Among the artists representing Louisiana are Debbie Fleming Caffery, Dawn DeDeaux, Troy Dugas, Brandon Graving, Elizabeth Shannon, and Robert Warrens.

These artists do not provide answers to the difficult questions we face. Instead they bravely ask the questions that lead to reflection and dialogue, the necessary precursor to action.

Elements of Nature: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation

Nature has been a primary source of inspiration for artists throughout history. From the time of the earliest cave paintings artists have continued man’s ceaseless dialogue with the elements, drawing inspiration from natural phenomena as well as wildlife. Elements of Nature: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation takes this theme as timely and poignantly relevant considering how severely the earth has been impacted by recent environmental disasters. The residents of Florida bask in balmy breezes but respect the capricious power of hurricanes. As seen in the works presented, the “elements of nature” are not limited to the ancient conception of earth, air, fire, and water. They also include hurricanes, typhoons, eclipses, and sunsets, as well as plant and animal life. Many other natural occurrences impact, and are impacted, by our lives on earth. Each artist in this exhibition helps us to view nature through their aesthetic eye.
