Forces of Nature: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation
From the time of the earliest cave paintings, artists have continued man's ceaseless dialogue with the elements, drawing inspiration from natural phenomena as well as wildlife. The theme of nature is particularly poignant for Louisiana residents at this time.
The past five years have witnessed the unprecedented elevation of the Mississippi River, devastating hurricanes, including Katrina and Gustave, the Gulf oil spill, and ongoing coastal erosion.
Forces of Nature: Selections from the Weisman Art Foundation presents universal insights as well as the artists' personal observations concerning environmental issues.
Exemplifying a wide range of contemporary production and aesthetic practices, the work of more than 60 artists is included. Internationally acclaimed artists, such as Joe Goode, Red Grooms, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, and Neil Welliver, are featured alongside emerging talent. Among the artists representing Louisiana are Debbie Fleming Caffery, Dawn DeDeaux, Troy Dugas, Brandon Graving, Elizabeth Shannon, and Robert Warrens.
These artists do not provide answers to the difficult questions we face. Instead they bravely ask the questions that lead to reflection and dialogue, the necessary precursor to action.
