The Intuitive Eye: Selections From The Frederick R. Weisman Collection
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Frederick R. Weisman was one of the most renowned West Coast collectors of twentieth-century art. Though widely known for his business success. good humor. and charitable spirit. it was his art collection that established him as an international figure. Comprised of over one thousand paintings. sculptures. mixed-media and video works. the collection spans numerous pre- and postwar art movements and includes work by both celebrated and emerging artists. With a keenly intuitive eye. Mr. Weisman selected important. vibrant. and dynamic works of art to comprise his very personal and remarkable collection.
To foster enthusiasm for art and to make the collection accessible to a wide audience. Mr: Weisman established the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in 1982. From the time he began acquiring art in the early '50s until his death in 1994. he believed it was his corporate duty to give something back to the public who had contributed to his business success. Now under the direction of his wife. curator. and conservator Billie Milam Weisman. the Foundation continues to make the collection publicly available through the following: loans to museums worldwide. tours at the Carolwood House Museum in Los Angeles. and the funding of art museums at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis: Pepperdine University in Malibu, the Frederick R. Weisman wing in the San Diego Museum of Ari: and the wing for contemporary Louisiana works in the New Orleans Museum of Art. The present exhibition of exciting and eclectic excerpts from the Weisman Collection provides viewers with a glimpse into the beauty. joy. and humor of Mr. Weisman’s ·eye· while carrying out his vision that the Foundation will. in his own words.
